The summer planting of Garlic is about ready to dig up and cure. Here are some tips for success.
- harvest the garlic when there is still 50% green in the leaves
- leave the roots and stems on the garlic during the drying process
- don’t leave the garlic on the ground to dry. The soil temperatures can cook your garlic.
- find a place out of the direct sun that is well ventilated to lay the garlic out to cure. We use a compost screening frame to lay out the garlic. A garage or out building with a window is a good place.
- after the garlic leaves and roots are dry and brittle, we clean the garlic up, leave the stems on , cut the roots back and braid them together. This hangs in our kitchen and the garlic stays good all winter long. If you find that some of your garlics are sprouting. Change the location of your braid to a cooler place.
