We live in the Pacific Northwest and planted the Kiwi variety commercially called Hayward. This is the large fuzzy brown variety. In our experience, this variety is not very winter hardy. We recommend a variety called “hardy Kiwi” (A. arguta) or Artic Beauty (A. kolomikta) or Silver Vine (A. polygama). If you live in a warmer winter climate, then the Hayward variety should do well.
Kiwis need a polinator so you will need to buy one male plant to every 6 to 10 female plants. The average yeild is from 50 to 100 pounds of fruit per plant. (Wow!) This information comes compliments of South Sound Seed Stewards.
Kiwi store well for the winter as long as you pick them while they are still firm and store in cool temperatures. A root cellar is ideal for storing kiwi. They can be stored in egg cartons or even in a bucket. When you want them to ripen, just bring them into the warm temperatures of the house.
